Surgical treatment for sesamoid pathologies by total sesamoidectomy

Abstract

The total sesamoidectomy is an option for patients with different sesamoid pathologies when other procedures fail. Objective: To evaluate the results of total sesamoidectomy in five patients. Methods: A retrospective study of five patients undergoing total sesamoidectomy. Age, gender, laterality, the surgical aproach, forefoot AOFAS questionnaire and assessment of pain using a visual analog scale (VAS) were collected. The average age was 38 years (33-42). Four females and one male. Results: two plantar, one dorsolateral and two medial approaches were carried out. There were no surgical complications. The mean preoperative VAS was 6.9 (6.4~8.3) and postoperative was 3.1 (0-6.3). The mean preoperative AOFAS was 63 (47-77) and postoperative was 76 (52-90). One patient has persistent pain. Conclusion: We found encouraging results and low complication rate.
