Surgical treatment of Morton’s neuroma through transverse plantar port: results assessment by AOFAS scale

Abstract

Objective: Assessing patients submitted to the surgical treatment of Morton’s neuroma resection, through plantar port, using American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scale before and after surgery. Methods: 66 patients (70 feet) were submitted to the surgical resection of Morton’s neuroma through plantar port, being 11 (16.7%) male and 55 (83.3%) female, 26 (39.4%) patients with the right side rushed, 36 (54.5%) with the left side and 4 (6.1%) bilaterally. There were 5 (7.2%) neuromas in the second intermetatarsal space, 49 (70%) in the third space and 16 (22.8%) with the involvement of the second e third spaces. The age ranged through 18 and 80 years old (median=51.8 years). The time of follow-up ranged from 12 to 62 months. Results: We have found as median variation of AOFAS criteria 60 points before surgery and 83.6 points after surgery. Excellent results were considered in 77% of the patients, good results in 17% of the patients, 6% with regular results and none result considered bad. As complications, there were three (4.29%) cases of neuroma’s recidivation, one (1.42%) case of infection and eight (11.42%) of residual pain. Conclusion: The surgical treatment of Morton’s neuroma through plantar port demonstrates results comparable to the others techniques described in the literature, being a good therapeutical option to the disease. The AOFAS scale seems to be useful to be applied to assessment of the results.
