Functional evaluation of the modified Hoffman procedure through FFI Scale

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the outcome of the modified Hoffmann procedure (first metatarso-phalangeal arthrodesis combined with excisional arthroplasty of the lesser metatarso-phalangeal joints) in rheumatic patients, through the Foot Function Index (FFI). Methods: A total of twenty-five patients with rheumatic arthritis, for at least ten years, underwent a modified Hoffmann procedure. The FFI was previously applied to the surgery, and the test was also applied about six months after surgery. Results: FFI score decreased about 47%. The scores of activity limitation sub-scale had the most expressive reduction. Conclusions: The surgical approach provides an improved functional outcome in rheumatic patients with severe deformities of the feet, which were caused by rheumatic arthritis.
