Metatarsal formula: comparison between three measurement methods
Keywords:
Foot; Metatarsus; MethodsAbstract
The metatarsal formula provides important information about the load distribution on the forefoot and allows better comprehension of various diseases that lead to metatarsalgia. Various methods of determining metatarsal formula are described in the scientific comunity, without agreement. This study aimed to compare two well described methods and a new proposed one which combines individualized foot progression angle. We studied 50 subjects ranging in age from 18-25 years (mean=22 ; SD=2 ), with normal feet. The foot progression angle (mean=9,8O) for both feet was determined for each individual and standard antero-posterior weight-bearing radiographs were taken. The relative metatarsal protusion was determined afterwards, using Hardy and Clapham, Viladot, and the new method. We observed predominance of index plus type in all methods. Significant statistical difference was observed between all methods.Downloads
