Abstract

Objective: To evaluate radiographically the surgical correction of mild to moderate hallux valgus deformities, symptomatic for over a year, by distal first metatarsal osteotomy. Methods: Thirteen feet (12 patients) were studied, with a follow-up of three to 25 months. Results: The average radiographic hallux valgus and intermetatarsal angles were, preoperatively, 25º and 13º respectively, and 12º and 6º postoperatively. The preliminary clinical results showed assymptomatic patients and good cosmetic results. Conclusions: The procedure yielded correction of the hallux valgus and intermetatarsal angles, no dorsal or plantar deformities were observed and the expected metatarsal shortening did not jeopardise the results.
