Abstract

Objective: A transversal and observational no randomized study was conducted to allow a comparative analysis between radiographical results obtained by the chevron technique alone (Group I) and the association of chevron and Akin techniques (Group II) for the correction of deformities of mild and moderate hallux valgus. Methods: Thirteen patients (17 feet) underwent surgery. The chevron technique waschosen for eight of their feet, while the association of both techniques was used on the other nine feet. All of the patients were women, averaging 45 years of age, presenting mild or moderate hallux valgus with a follow-up time of 26 months. The angular values measured before and after surgery are given for hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA). Results: HVA average reduction was 11o on Group I and 10o on Group II. IMA average reduction was 5o on Group I and 3o on Group II. DMAA average reduction was 8o on Group I and 10o on Group II. Conclusions: It was concluded that both the approaches did show similar good radiographical results with reduction of HVA, IMA and DMAA, when they are compared.
