Abstract

Background.Over 110 million people worldwide have Diabetes mellitus. Complications of diabetes constitute the most common indications for hospitalization and non traumati camputation in the United States. Approximately 32% of hospitals admissions are related to foot ulcers, resulting over 150% risk of mortality in these patients. The most important risk factors for the development diabetic foot ulcers are well determinate and include following peripheral neuropathy and joint deformities. Method. About 300 diabetic patients studied from 2000 a 2006 at Federal University of São Paulo and Orthopaedic Clinic at Dr Carmino Caricchio Hospital, clinical evaluation has been determinated presence of severe insufficient range of motion of the ankle (less than 10 degrees of ankle extension) in 12 patients, who underwent a surgical approach. Results. The follow up demonstrated prevention of foot ulcers in 91,30% of the diabetic patients, keeping the good foot function and improving the quality of life. Conclusion. ln this study we can demonstrate that insufficient ankle extension also represents an important risk of development of diabetic foot ulcers. ldentifying and the treatment of this condition is determinant to decrease patient morbidity, decrease the utilization of expensive resources, and decrease the risk for amputation and premature death.
