Abstract

Introduction: the current document describes 14 cases of patients with a surgical intervention of the short lateral fibula tendon, which were diagnosed throw a physical check and evaluation of the magnetic resonance imaging requested, in order to determine the usefulness of this kind of medical study. Material and Methods: fourteen patients operated between December 2001 to November 2010, in a age range between 21 to 78 years, were retrospectively reviewed, etiology, wound location, classification, final outcome –post operation – and reintegration (work and sports). Results: it was observed that the magnetic resonance imaging requested, assisted to reinforce the diagnosis arrived throw a physical check, however this study did not provide a certain magnitude of the injury. Discussion: the diagnosis of the injury in the fibula tendon is a results of a complete medical history, a physical check and a magnetic resonance. Khoury and Title, ensures that the magnetic resonance is useful for the pre-surgical, but, according to our study, the 100% of the patients did have a pre-surgical magnetic resonance and half of them did not match with the intra-surgical findings. Due to this reason and based on the inefficiency of the conservative treatment and the high index of suspect of injury, the surgical treatment is justified and recommended. Conclusion: the magnetic resonance imaging showed a high specificity for the identification of the short lateral fibula tendon. However, this study presents a low sensibility for its diagnosis and a deficit in the morphological description and injury extension, which it is reflected in the classification of this kind of lesions.
