Abstract

Introduction: the current war situation in Colombia has led to the use of unconventional weapons that cause severe trauma in the extremities, being the Ilizarov external fixation a vital tool in the treatment of these injuries. The objective of this research was to determine the clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes in the management of war trauma of the foot and ankle using the llizarov external fixator in the orthopaedic and traumatology service of the hospital militar central in Bogotá between 2011 and 2012. Results: the study included a total of 4 patients, the male gender (100%), with involvement of the left or right lower limb (50% each) of landmine traumatic etiology (75%) with open fractures type IIIB (75%) with a mean rate of 6.75 in the Mess index with improvement in pain and function after surgery, according to the AOFAS scale. Conclusions: the war trauma in our country is a challenge to the orthopedic surgeon because of the massive destruction of the tissues that generates, thus, the Ilizarov external fixator represents a valid therapeutic option in severely traumatized limb salvage.
