Abstract

Objective: The objective of this research was to functionally evaluate patients undergoing reconstruction of the ankle due to sequelae of fracture or injury to the epiphyseal plate using AOFAS into the preoperative and postoperative periods. Methods: This is a interventional prospective study of qualitative and quantitative approach with a sample of 23 patients, where all results were statistically analyzed by Bioestat® 5.0. Results: The results evaluating pain preoperatively show that 26% of patients complain of severe pain and almost always present, 48% moderate and daily pain and 26% light and casual. On post operative these data were 52% did not have any pain, 26% mild and occasional, 17% moderate and5% daily and intense and almost always present. Before surgery 13% of our patients showed normal or mildly restricted hindfoot motion, 65% of the patients showed moderate hindfoot restriction and 22%, severe hindfoot restricted motion. At the postoperative period, 38% of the patients showed normal to mildly restricted hindfoot mobility, 57% showed moderate and 5% intense restriction of the hindfoot motion. Conclusion: The correction of sequelae of ankle fractures, with osteotomies, enables correction of anatomic axis and improved function and pain, as assessed by the AOFAS scores.
