Post-operative functional evaluation of chronic ligament instability of the ankle

comparison between the Arthro-Bröstrom technique and the Bröstron-Gould open procedure

Abstract

Objective: The proposal of this analytical retrospective study was functionally assess patients with chronic ankle instability, surgically treated by open (modified Bröstrom-Gould) and arthroscopic (Arthro-Bröstrom) techniques, using AOFAS score evaluation in post-operative period. Methods: Thirty-eight patients were interviewed and all information recorded were divided in two groups: a (n=21) named Broström-Gould group and b (n=17) named Arthro-Broström group, taking as independent variable statistical representation of the AOFAS score. Results: Data collected allowed us to observe that Arthro-Broström technique (91.5 + 3.7) had better scoring average compared o open technique (84.8 + 12.2). Conclusion: Arthroscopic technique showed better functional results, suggesting the importance of similar studies with a larger sample. It must be considered as a viable alternative to open traditional techniques.
