Abstract

The treatment of hallux valgus has evolved over the years, ranging from a focus on soft tissues 20 years ago, to an approach based on the skeletal correction nowadays. Even the origin of the deformity is not clear, but it is increasingly clear that an initially analyzed deformity in a single plane (Varus deformity - valgus), today it is deemed a multiplanar deformity. A large percentage of hallux valgus deformities have been fixed for years with uniplanar osteotomies, but in recent years due to better understanding of the deformity it has become more important to consider the pronation or coronal rotation of the metatarsal. In older population where osteoporosis begins to play a role, techniques using fusion are important to consider. Less demanding population may benefit from mini-invasive techniques which must be within our armamentarium. In this article, we deliver our opinion regarding the current concepts of treatment of hallux valgus, the more reliable osteotomies to use as well as our algorithm of treatment and the latest trends.
