Abstract

Objective: The proximal fifth metatarsal often suffers injuries of different etiologies, and consequently receives several treatments. Three different types of fifth metatarsal fractures are known: tuberosity avulsion fracture, Jones’ fracture, and meta-diafisary fracture causedby stress. Anatomic and biomechanics characteristics of the trauma mechanism, as well as vascularization and consolidation potential, are discussed with the related injuries. A special interest is dedicated to the diagnosis of proximal apophasis as differential diagnosis of non-consolidated traumatic injuries in professional soccer players. Methods: Seven professional soccer players were evaluated from the beginning of their symptoms of the injuries concerned in this work, until their return to normal activities. Results: Different types of treatment including operative and non-operative were used. Conclusion: This article presents the importance of an accurate diagnosis in these injuries in athletes, in order to get a better functional capacity in a shorter recovery period.
