The minimally invasive hallux valgus correction: a preliminary clinical and radiographic evaluation

Abstract

Objective: Minimally invasive hallux valgus correction has been described with good results.The aim of this study is to evaluate clinically and radiographically the Giannini’s procedure, also known as SERI. Methods: Twenty feet in 16 patients (four bilateral), aged between 36 to 66 years (mean age: 48 years) affected by mild/moderate hallux valgus were studied, with a mean follow-up of six months. Procedure: a 1 to 2 cm skin incision, subcapital osteotomy stabilized by a 2.5 mm Kirschner wire, bunion correction. The valuesmeasured before and after surgery are given for hallux valgus angle (HVA), intermetatarsal angle (IMA), distal metatarsal articular angle (DMAA), sesamoid subluxation (SS) and AOFAS score. Results: The mean preoperative HVA was 23º while at the follow up it was 10º, mean preoperative IMA was 11º, while at the follow-up it was 4º, mean preoperative DMAA 11º, while at follow-up it was 3º. Mean preoperative AOFAS score was 46 and 87 at follow-up. Mean preoperative SS was 1.7 (grade), and 0.65 at follow-up (pConclusion: The minimally invasive hallux valgus surgery showed good clinical and radiographic results, with adequate correction of the mild/moderate deformity, reporting 85% of good or excellent results.
